Summary

This is an evaluation of two dryland research programmes in eastern Africa supported by Sida/SAREC. The major area of the 6.2 million km2 eastern African countries (Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda) is arid or semi-arid, receiving less than 400 mm rain per annum. This includes desert, semi-desert, rangeland, woodland, and forest. Over 70% of the estimated population of 153 million depends for their livelihood on arable farming, agro-pastoralism or pastoralism.
