Inflation, high unemployment and sharp increases in food and fuel prices since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine are hitting Uganda’s population hard. More and more people are unable to feed themselves. People’s freedom and influence over their lives and society has diminished, as has access to education and health care.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch3>Democracy and human rights under pressure\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp>Democratic development is being set back. Human rights defenders and the media are subject to threats and harassment. Discrimination against LGBTI people has worsened as a result of one of the world’s harshest laws where people who have same-sex sex face the death penalty. Civil society organisations find it more difficult to work for change. Around 50 organisations, as well as the UN Human Rights Office, have been forced to close their offices in Uganda.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch3>Displaced people particularly vulnerable\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp>Uganda is the country in Africa that hosts the largest number of displaced people. Most have fled from DR Congo and South Sudan. People who are displaced are particularly vulnerable. 80 per cent of displaced people are women and they are at increased risk of gender-based violence.\u003C\u002Fp>\n","Examples of what Sida contributes to","\u003Ch3>Supporting civil society\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp>Sida supports civil society organisations working to strengthen respect for human rights. Civil society in Uganda is vibrant, active and vocal, but is increasingly silenced by increased government restrictions and censorship.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch3>Increasing access to renewable energy\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp>42 per cent of Uganda’s population has access to electricity.\u003Csup>6\u003C\u002Fsup> This negatively affects people, small businesses and the economy. Sida’s support for the development of solar energy has resulted in more people having access to electricity.
