Musika is a national Non-Government Organisation, which aim to reduce poverty and create wealth in rural Zambia by stimulating business relationships between the corporate sector and smallholder farmers. The assessment is primarily based on a quantitative analysis of secondary data sources.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>We find clear positive, significant impact for income, livestock, food security and access to finance. While we also found that the number of assets has increased for the direct beneficiaries, this effect is not significant. Results on farm productivity and technology are also insignificant.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Despite some positive effects, Musika’s support has been insufficient to counteract negative trends in both overall and extreme poverty at national level in Zambia during the period. This was to be achieved by incentivising private sector companies’ to invest in off-grid energy generation, distribution and service delivery, with the goal to reach more than one million Zambians living in peri-urban and rural areas. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Positives:\u003C\u002Fstrong> We find that the BGFZ had an impressive impact and outreach, reaching more than one million people. Most of them were new customers without previous access to energy products, and who lacked a good alternative. Access to basic energy services has contributed to enhanced quality of life for the costumers and their families. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Potential shortcomings:\u003C\u002Fstrong> However, there is an absence of real evidence on health and education impacts, and the programs focus on productive use of the energy products has not yielded much. Some gains were also noted in small business engagement among urban recipients, and rural households have started more home gardening activities.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Potential shortcomings:\u003C\u002Fstrong> Negative effects were found on breastfeeding and vitamin A uptake due to misconceptions about nutrition and SCT eligibility. We also found negative effects on asset accumulation. Targeting was weak in urban areas. While reaching 33% of Zambia’s population, SCT has not been sufficient to counteract the rise in national poverty. However, the SCT were only equivalent to the purchasing power of USD 0.25 per day per household. There were also positive effects on assets and some social services.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Potential shortcomings: The farming component was less successful with\u003C\u002Fstrong> no effect on crop income due to inconsistent and low uptake of conservation farming techniques. Distribution of goats also had no effects. Fruit trees for women were successful, however. While self-reported gender attitudes improved, there was no effect on gender-based violence. Sida’s non-earmarked funding enabled adaptive management and flexibility, allowing funds to be spent across activities as needed, which was perceived as important for achieving positive results.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Potential shortcomings:\u003C\u002Fstrong> The security situation in the project areas remain volatile, and gains  are fragile due to recurring crises. The project did not successfully address the weak or absent institutions. Local achievements were not scaled up to the national level, highlighting the difficulties of achieving sustainable impact in a fragile, and conflict-affected context with limited political will. Sida’s reporting is based exclusively on the project data available, which result in limitations of rigidity.
